Walk-In Cooler Repair in London

Walk-in cooler repair restores cold rooms and walk-in chillers that run warm, ice up, leak or alarm, covering condensing units, evaporators, controls, doors and panels. We offer 24/7 same-day response across London, with call-outs from £120 plus VAT.

Walk-in coolers and cold rooms we repair

A walk-in cooler, often called a cold room or walk-in chiller in the UK, holds the bulk of a kitchen's chilled stock. When it fails, restaurants, hotels, pubs, butchers, food manufacturers and warehouses can lose thousands of pounds of produce in hours. We repair walk-in coolers of all sizes, from compact modular rooms in a restaurant basement to large cold stores serving distribution and production sites.

A walk-in system has several parts that can fail independently: the condensing unit, usually on a roof, yard or plant room; the evaporator and fans inside the room; the controller, probes and alarms; the room itself, including insulated panels, door, seals, strip curtains and frame heaters; and the drainage and pipework connecting them. Our engineers check the whole system rather than the obvious symptom alone.

Common walk-in cooler faults

Older cold rooms may still run on R404A, while newer systems commonly use lower-GWP refrigerants such as R448A or R449A. We identify the refrigerant and condensing unit specification before any work, and we can advise on whether an ageing walk-in cooler is worth repairing or would benefit from a planned condensing unit replacement.

A room that is slowly warming often has a dirty condenser coil, a failed condenser fan, an iced evaporator or a door that is not sealing. Outdoor condensing units in London collect leaves, dust and debris, and summer heat makes a borderline system fail. An evaporator covered in ice usually points to a failed defrost heater, defrost termination probe, controller setting or evaporator fan, or to warm air entering through damaged strip curtains or a door left open during deliveries.

A condensing unit that will not start, starts and stops repeatedly or trips the electrics can have a failed contactor, capacitor, pressure switch, compressor fault or wiring problem. Low refrigerant pressures indicate a leak somewhere in the pipework, evaporator or condensing unit, which must be located and repaired before recharging. Water on the floor normally comes from a blocked or frozen drain line, a failed drain heater or a cracked drip tray.

Door problems are often overlooked. Worn gaskets, misaligned hinges, failed door closers and faulty frame heaters let warm, moist air in, causing ice on the floor, frost around the frame and long compressor run times. Repairing the door is often the cheapest way to restore room performance.

24/7 same-day response

Walk-in cooler breakdowns are treated as emergencies, with 24/7 cover including nights, weekends and bank holidays. When you call, tell us the current room temperature, how quickly it is rising, what stock is inside and whether alarms are showing. Keep the door closed, minimise entries and, if possible, move high-risk stock such as dairy, fish and meat to other refrigeration. Record temperatures for your food safety log.

Any work on the sealed refrigerant circuit is carried out by F-Gas certified engineers in line with the F-Gas Regulations 2014. A low refrigerant charge normally points to a leak, so the leak is found and repaired before any recharge, and refrigerants are never mixed or substituted without confirming they suit the equipment.

Our repair process

The engineer checks the room and evaporator temperatures, defrost operation, fans, controller settings and probe accuracy, then inspects the condensing unit, electrical components, pressures and pipework. The door, seals, curtains and heaters are checked too. You receive a clear quote, and approved work is completed immediately where parts allow, with the room pulled back down to temperature before the engineer leaves. We cover sites across London, Surrey and towns around the M25.

Walk-In Cooler Repair FAQs

Do you offer 24/7 walk-in cooler repair?

Yes. Walk-in cooler and cold room breakdowns are covered 24/7, including nights, weekends and bank holidays, with same-day response across London subject to engineer availability.

Why is my walk-in cooler warm?

Common causes are a dirty or blocked condenser, failed condenser or evaporator fan, iced evaporator, defrost fault, door not sealing or a refrigerant leak causing low pressures.

Why is ice building up in my cold room?

Ice usually comes from a failed defrost heater, probe or controller setting, or from warm humid air entering through worn door seals, damaged strip curtains or a door left open.

How much does a walk-in cooler repair cost?

Call-outs start from £120 plus VAT. After diagnosis we provide a free written quote for parts and labour before any chargeable work begins.

What should I do while waiting for an engineer?

Keep the door closed, limit entries, move high-risk stock such as dairy, meat and fish to other refrigeration if possible, and record temperatures for your food safety log.
